cut back butterfly bush

Question
i planted a butterfly bush last year, do i have to cut back now? i lived in vienna,wv

Answer
i'm in southern nj
yes...late winter/early spring is the correct time to cut back the stems to 6-12" from the ground. flowers are produced on new growth. if you have a large variety of landscape plants get to a local garden center/nursery to quiz them on plants in your area. buy a pruning book while there(ortho, sunset, etc.). it is important to check a book before pruning. how, when, and what to prune often effects the success of flower production for the plant involved.
good luck
