winterizing planted hibiscus in Alabama

Question
I have approx 10 exotic hibiscus planted in my yard that were beautiful all summer. Some have stalks as big as 2 or more inches around.  I can not physically remove and bring indoors.  How do I winterize them?

Answer
Hi Jacquelyn,
Thanx for your question.  If you have a tropical hibisuces (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) it will not survive in your Alabama winter.  Even in South Alabama, the climate is too cold for tropical hibiscus.  You would have to have someone dig them up for you and put them in pots and then store them in a room that has a southern or eastern exposure.  They will drop a lot of leaves through the winter and reduce blooming until the spring time.

Here's a great link that might help.

If you live along the Gulf Coast, you may be able to grow Hibiscus rosa-sinensis outdoors and just mulch it if a hard frost is predicted and cover it with a sheet until the weather gets better.

If you have hardy hibiscus, Hibiscus moscheutos, cut it down to the ground in the late fall and it will come back in late April or early May.  I hope this helps.
Tom
