mini cattleya

Question
I have a mini cattleya that after it bloomed dropped all of its leaves.  I have noticed that it is developing leaves again, but also roots coming out of where the leaves are developing.  Should I just leave it alone or pot those leaves-roots?  If I do pot them then what kind of medium should I use?  The original came in lava rocks.

Answer
Joanne, without knowing the name of the minicatt it is difficult to say.  Several members of the cattleya alliance are  rupiculous (ie rock loving).  If your minicatt is one of those species or a hybrid of one or more such species, growing it in lava rock makes sense. For now, I would leave it as is.  I do not know, however, of any minicatts that drop their leaves.  That is more  a characteristic of minidendrobiums.  Some dendrobiums are deciduous and drop their leaves before going into a rest period. If you received your plant from a reputable grower who told you it is a minicatt that is fine; otherwise I would be skeptical that it is a minicatt. While I prefer plants with name tags, that is also not reliable either as I have had some plant tags that some well-meaning plant person picked up from the bench and just inserted it into the nearest pot.
