an overwatered orchid

Question
MY mother put her orchid outside because it wasn't growing inside . The rain got to it and it has to much water, the leaves have turned a dark green and I'm not sure how to save it.

Answer
Tearske, let me assume that you have a phalaenopsis orchid, although my recommendations could apply to many other types.  You need to repot your plant into fresh orchid potting mix.  If, in unpotting it, you notice roots that are mushy or stringy, those are dead and need to be removed prior to repotting.  Healthy roots are firm and turn green when wet.  Be sure to repot it to a pot that has lots of drainage holes in the bottom as orchids prefer a well drained potting mix in the root zone.  Do not let the pot stand in water.  If the leaves are soft or mushy that does not bode well.  If the leaves are firm, they are fine.  A dark green color only indicates that the plant has been grown in too much shade and suggest that you need to increase the light levels a bit. Phalaenopsis orchids prefer temperatures in the 55-80 degree F range.
