mini calla lilly plant

Question
Hi Darlene,

I have a mini calla lilly plant that I bought at Whole Foods. It is flowering, and the blooms (blush / pink in color) are doing very well, but the leaves are all yellow. I went away for the weekend, and it was dry when I got home and a couple of the leaves were yellow. I watered it, but now all the leaves are yellow, even though the blooms are still in good shape. I'd like to fix that, and I'd also like to repot it into a nicer container. I'm an absolute amateur at gardening so any advice you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Christie,

How much sun is your calla lily getting? They love the sun and need as much as possible. It also needs to stay moist most of the time and be fertilized regularly. If you live where night temps are above 50 degrees it could stay outside in full sun and it would be very happy there. The yellow leaves could  be caused by not enough water or not enough light.

Or the yellow leaves could be there just because the plant is getting older and the blooms are almost done. Calla Lillie are bulbs like tulips. They bloom for a month to 6 weeks then they are done and will need a 4- 6 month resting period where you let it go totally dry, put it in a brown paper bag and put it in a dark closet. After 4 months check it weekly for signs of new growth. When you see new growth put it back out on your sunniest window sill and keep it moist. Give it regular doses of miracle grow and you will have continuos  beautiful blooms. Good luck.

Darlene
