Mini Rose

Question
Hi Lynnette

I have a small mini rose which was rising well until a few days ago which it's leaves suddenly started to fall down, particularly from lower parts. I checked out and saw some spider webs. Though I wash the leaves 1-2 times a day, I still can see very small dark brownish dots on back of leaves. when these dots appear after a while leaf color changes and falls.
That would be very kind if you can help me.

thanks,
keyvan

Answer
Spider mites are the hardest insects to control because they live on the undersides of the leaves and can stay protected from anything that you do to them. They are also in the soil too so an rose insecticide is the only way you can stop them. The black spots on the leaves is a fungal problem called Black Spot and that also requires a fungicide type of spray for roses. Mini roses are no different than the big garden roses and like the same conditions such as growing in a garden. I would replant your mini rose is a larger pot using only potting soil because it is sterile and will have no insects or fungus spores in it. The old pot with have the eggs of the spider mites so put in in the garbage don't use it for any other plant. Unless you clean it using boiling water on it. Then I would cut the rose right back to about 6 inches , use whatever sprays you buy and then give it a teaspoon of slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote 14-14-14. Slow release will last for a year and will give the rose a tiny amount f food when you water it. You will then see new and healthy growth coming back is a week to ten days.
