Transplanting a new orchid shoot

Question
New shoot
New shoot
Hi, I've read the question about a new shoot coming from a flower spike, but mine, (as you will see from attached photo), is coming out of the base of the original plant.  I don't want to harm the original plant as I have had it now for over 12 years and it has at least one flower spike a year.  How do I detach the new shoot from the original without harming either, if possible?

Answer
Thanks for the picture Barbara.  Since the new shoot has its own root supply, you may sever its connection to the parent plant and pot it up separately.  Be sure its roots are soaked thoroughly until green as they tend to be brittle and can break when bent. You will not harm the mother plant during this process as it has its own root system.  Also, when you repot the mother plant you may want to pot some of its aerial roots into the potting mix.
