Orchid dormancy

Question
My mother has dementia but still loves to look after her 2 orchids - however she is now struggling to remember all the proper care things.  I think one is a phalaenopsis as it is in flower at the moment.  The concern is there is another flowershoot coming from the base - should we allow this or should the plant go into a dormant period following flowering?
The other plant finished flowering about 4 weeks ago apparently and has now got another flower shoot with buds on it.  This shoot appeared as the last one was flowering so again I am wondering about dormancy. I don't know what type that is - the leaves are the same as the phalaenopsis but with no flowers I can't be sure.

Answer
Thank you for your question Bridget.  Phalaenopsis do not require a rest period. It is not unusual for a phal to bloom repeatedly.  It clearly likes the growing conditions so that is a good thing. For now, enjoy.  Watch for signs of stress, such as loss of leaves or roots, which is a sign that the plant's potting mix has broken down and the plant needs to be repotted. The usual time for repotting is just after a plant has finished blooming. However, as long as the plant is healthy, you shouldn't be concerned.
