baby orchid on the stick or shoot

Question

baby orchid leaf?
I have a baby orchid leaf coming off the shoot about 9 inches from the orginal leafs I expected it was a shoot but now looks like a new baby orchid please help this is my first orchid and I just got it to bloom again on one shoot now the other shoot has this the leafs what do I do with it can I start a new one and how

Answer
Marsha, it is a new baby orchid, called a keiki.  These form at nodes or joints on the flower spike.  It will grow where it is forming larger and more leaves and, eventually, roots. If left on long enough, some keikis will even form flower spikes and bloom on the mother plant. If you want to grow this plant up as a separate plant, wait unti lthe leaves are at least 2-3 inches long with well developed roots.  At that time, a simple twist where the keiki originates at the node should free it from the mother plant, after which it can be potted up. A plant that produces one keiki, likely can produce others.
