ornamental pepper

Question
I have been given an ornamental pepper as a gift and am wondering about it's longevity and how to care for it.  It is in a very small pot at the moment. If I repot it how big can it get?

Answer
Hi Janet
I remember when I was a teenager, my mom went to a "Houseplant Party", which was like a Tupperware Party and she bought a Ornamental Pepper Plant.  I see them every now and again in the grocery stores.  There are a couple of different types, some being edible and others not. Either way, my understanding is that the pepper is very, very hot so make sure your plant is kept out of the way of kids and animals.   I have seen them range in colors of red/oranges/yellows and even purple!
You can use your pepper plant as either an indoor plant or a outdoor plant.  If you put outdoors, make sure you bring it in before the first winter frost, if you live in a cold area (I live in Phoenix, therefore do not worry about frost)
They do make a great indoor plant also.  If placed in a full sunlit area, they will produce not only more peppers but more colorful peppers.  The soil needs to be kept moist, not soggy.  Best way to check is by putting your index finger down in the soil to your knuckle-if it feels like it is beginning to dry out that far down, go ahead and water.  Make sure you fill in the hole your finger left.  You can count on watering at least once a week though.
If in the right area and watered correctly, you can expect to have your pepper plant for a long time.
Good Luck Janet-hope this was helpful to you
Leslie
