Plant has dropped its leaves

Question
I was given a "glossy privet" for christmas from a friend.  It is in a medium pot, and I am keeping it at about 70 degrees.  I have it in a south-facing window as per the plant-care instructions, and I am trying to keep the plant as humid as possible.  I am a novice at best when it comes to plantcare, and my "tree" has lost nearly all of its leaves.  The tree itself is still alive, however, and I would like to save it if at all possible.  Should I cut the dead leaves off of the tree, or let them fall naturally?  Will the plant be able to survive the winter with no leaves?

Answer
Hi Ryan,

Glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum) is not an easy houseplant, primarily because it needs a lot of direct sunlight and also cool temps in the winter months. The ideal night time temps should be in the 45 - 55 degree range and that is pretty cold for the average house.

In addition, this plant does not tolerate excessive dryness or soil that stays soggy.

The fact that yours has lost most of its leaves is not a good sign. Remove the dead leaves. Try to keep the temps cooler and water thoroughly as soon as the surface of the soil feels bone dry. Look for signs of healthy new growth.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
