Umbrella plant has wet leaves

Question
Hi I have an umbrella plant in the house and at first we noticed that it had spider mites and since then got rid of them. But now there are what look a little like vey small barnacals on the leaves and also the leaves are covered with some wet sticky liquid.
The plant also has stoped growing and the leaves are falling off
Just wondering if you can offer any info on this

Answer
Hi Damion
I am sorry for the delay-my mom was taken to the hospital Friday morning and I have not been at home.
It sounds as if your 'scheffelera', aka, Umbrella Tree, has a case of scale.  They will suck the sap from the plant and leave a sticky substance known as honeydew.
They are small oval brown hard shelled bugs,  Scheffelera's are prone to getting them, along with spider mite. How long have you had the plant?  I had bought a type of a scheffelera a few weeks ago which I discovered was covered with scale when I got it home.  My momey was returned to me.
If it is not loaded with the scale, you should be able to treat it.  Try to wipe off as many as you can with a cotton soaked with rubbing alcohol.  Spray the plant with either dish soap, rubbing alcohol and water or you can get a houseplant pest spray at the store.
Make sure you treat the other plants in your house also.

Good Luck Damion,
Leslie
