Yucca Elephantides tree

Question
-------------------------
Followup To
The plant was in a container with holes for drainage.  I just had it repotted (by a professional) to a larger pot with drainage holes yesterday.

Question -
I just brought home a 5ft yucca plant two weeks ago. It gets goood sunlight but I have noticed several leaves are turning brown from the tip to the center. New growth is yellow. I live in Chicago so it is city water. I did water it a little everyday but have recently waited until the soil is very dry.  Help!  It is beautiful and I don't want it to die.
Answer -
Kathy,

Is it in a pot with a hole in the bottom for drainage?
Let me know and I will answer you.

Answer
Kathy,

OK, that is good. The key to yuccas is enough sun and letting it get very dry between waterings. It is a desert plant and as such needs lots of sun. It needs to sit next to a south facing window with no coverings all day. It needs a good 6-8 hours of actual sun.

It also needs to get bone dry between waterings. I suggest that you invest in a moisture meter for under $20.00 at a garden center and use it to check if the plant is dry. Do not water it again until the sensor poked deep into the roots registers dry. If it is very wet that could take 4-6 weeks. I water mine every 3-4 weeks in the winter when it is indoors. Mine goes outside during the summer and gets watered weekly then. I also suggest that you buy distilled water for it and quit using city water due to the chlorine. Distilled water here is about 89 cents a gallon.

Your brown leaves indicates either too much water or not enough sun. Mine always gets a few over the winter because it is difficult to give it enough sun indoors. They usually start with the lowest (oldest) leaves and goes up. The upper leaves get more sun because they are not shaded as much as the loewr leaves. Then mine goes outdoors in the summer and perks up and grows a lot of new leaves.

Good luck with yours. I'm not that far from you because I'm in Fort Wayne, IN.
