Spineless Yucca Leaves

Question
Hi Darlene,

The window gets the sun (such as we have in England!)from around 9.00am until mid-afternoon. I generally water it about once a week and I give it around a pint of water.

The plant is about 3' high and it is in a pot some 18" diameter. I have put a layer of gravel at the top of the pot as I was told that this would prevent the plant from drying out.

The window is quite a large one - floor to ceiling - and is only single glazed although I do close the curtains in the evenings to try and prevent draughts.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Darlene,

I wonder if you can help me, I have a Yucca plant indoors - I believe it is called a spineless yucca and it is about five years old. The plant is in front of a window.

Recently the ends of several leaves have turned brown - do you know what is causing this? The problem occurs mainly on the top leaves and effects the top 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch of the leaf.

Will this harm the plant and how can I put it right?

Any help and advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

David,

2 Questions. What direction does the window face that the yucca sits by?  How often do you water it?

Answer
David,

Yuccas are desert plants and love the sun. The more the better. That is quite a large pot for the size of the plant. My yucca is 24 years old and has 3 plants in it in a 16 inch pot.  You should never have to repot the plant. I think your problem is a build up of too much water. This plant likes to dry out totally between waterings.
I suggest you find a moisture meter at a garden center. In the states they are around $10.00. The probe on this can be inserted into the soil between the stones to tell if it is dry. Do not water it unless it says it is dry.

If you can'[t find a meter you can use a dowel rod (or a freshly sharpened pencil) and insert it down in soil. You should be able to tell if it is wet or dry.

The roots of yucca like to breath between waterings and the leaf spots indicates that the roots may be rotting because of too much water. During the winter I only water mine once a month. During the summer every 7-10 days.
Good luck.

Darlene
