Rubber Tree

Question
My Rubber Tree is not doing well.  It has lost all of its leaves that it had when we got it and now the new leaves that have grown are wilting and falling off.  I water it once a week, it sits in a window that does not get too much light, however it does sit over a vent.  Could the heat from the vent be causing the wilting?  What do I do???

Answer
Hi Amy, Rubber Plants grown inside in a container are very  prone to losing their leaves; don't water them too much, they don't like it, but they do need humidity, if you mist them frequently the leaf shed should diminish, it won't die on you when it defoliates, but it is disheartening. Water it once a week and keep it sprayed and watch for spider mites. You also should have it in a container larger then the one it came in; the black plastic containers that these plants come in need to be replaced with a larger one with drainage medium in the bottom. You probably will find it root bound, so take it out spread the roots and repot it....regards Nick:)
