household plant soil insects

Question
I bought some potting soil about a month ago and noticed a multitude of fine, black bugs moving throughout that soil, so i panicked and repotted them with another brand of potting soil. i opened this soil bag only to find other small brownish bugs moving around in it. Am i to expect the presence of small insects in store bought potting soil?  i don't want to throw another bag away in ignorance.  Thanks :)

Answer
Hi Quinetha,

No, good indoor potting mix should not contain any critters. You should use a peat-based, soilless potting mix. Pro-Mix brand is a good one. Also make sure that the bag is not open or have any rips or tears in it.

Keep in mind that unnecessary repotting is the single most common cause of plant problems, so you may want to reconsider repotting that you are contemplating. I have written an article on this topic that I will forward to anyone who sends a request to my address below.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
