winterizing outdoor fig tree

Question
i have 2 outdoor fig trees that i would like to winterize. i live in new york city. a few years back i lost a couple of trees do to cold weather, i hate to lose these. any suggestions.

Answer
Anthony,

I have two edible fig trees in northern Indiana that I have kept in pots. I allow them to drop their leaves and then move them to my cool unheated basment or unheated garage. That is the easiest. Other methods I have heard of if they are planted in the ground would be to wrap the tree with burlap filled with straw to mulch the tree all the way to the top. Or to dig a large trench on one side of the tree and under the  roots on that side so the tree will actually lay down  into the ground, cover it with straw and burlap. Those are the only methods I have heard of. Using a product called Wilt Proof may also help. Good luck.
