Hoya Soil Recommendations

Question
I have a hoya that has died back! it was dropped and the soild
was ready to be replaced. I used BACTO High Density
Professional potting soil. The leave are yelloing. I had to cut part
of the plant back. I am sure it needs more sun? I also used Safers
insececttsidel soap. After repotting it. Would it be benificial to
add Peters Orchid Growing Bark to the top and slowly introduce
this plant back into moe light? Thank you in advance Helen

Answer
Hi Helen,

I know your intentions are good, but you may be trying to do too much for your Hoya, a plant that thrives on neglect.

First, I hope you put your Hoya back into the same pot, not a larger one. This plant must be kept potbound.

Second, it would have been better to reuse the soil that was in the pot before it was dropped. Soil does NOT need to be replaced periodically. Any standard potting mix with some porous material (sand, perlite, ground bark chips) would be fine. I am not familiar with Bacto, but "high density" does not sound appropriate. There is no need to add bark to the top. In fact, the bark will just keep the soil from drying out sooner and that is not good.

Third, there is no need for Safer's soap unless there is a pest problem. Do not use it to prevent a pest problem.

Fourth, Hoyas want maximum light so place it in your sunniest window as soon as possible.

In sum, a small pot, porous soil that is allowed to dry out almost completely between waterings and lots of direct sun are what your Hoya requires.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
