rubber tree pruning

Question
I have a large rubber tree (about 5 ft. with many stems) When I prune it white sap pours out of the cut end.  Does this harm the plant?  Is there anything I should do to protect the cut area?

Answer
Hi Diane,

Your rubber tree is in the Ficus genus and they all "bleed" white, sticky sap. For some people the sap can be a minor skin irritant. It also will stain light colored natural fabric.

The "bleeding" will stop on its own without harm to the plant, usually within 5-10 minutes. If you want to prevent it from dripping more quickly, then put a small piece of paper towel over the wound until it has stopped. After that, it needs no protection.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.

If this information has been helpful, please take the time to give me a rating and nomination.
