china doll propagation

Question
How could I propagate my living 8-year old China Doll plant, creating a "baby" plant from it? Right now this plant has no shoots coming from the base (though it has in the past), a long woody main stem, and some green stems shooting off from that main stem. It has never flowered.

Answer
Hi Laura,
China Dolls can be propagated by stem tip cuttings. I will warn you, the success rate for propagating China Dolls is low, but to me that just makes it all the more satisfying when you do have a success.
Take a stem cutting from a fairly new stem. Make a diagonal cut just below a node where it branches out. The stem will need at least 4 nodes, remove the 2 bottom sets of branches, leaving the last 2 at the top. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone and stick into fresh soil. The cutting will need high humidity. One way to keep the humidity high is to make a plastic bag tent around the cutting.
It will take quite a while before the cutting sprouts roots. The cutting may wilt a little the first couple days then it should return to normal.
Don't give up, unless the cutting stays wilted or becomes wilted later and dies, leave it in the moist soil until it grows roots. No matter how long it takes.
Good luck.
I hope this helps, if you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy & Gracie
