Pruning a Massangeana Cane

Question
I have several Massangeana Cane's growing in my atrium.  2 shoots grew to ver 15' and were touching the ceiling.  I was forced to cut back these and I choose to make this at the point of common connection to the main trunk.  Now both cut's are dripping with sap and generating mold.  I have tried using Treekote tree wound dressing but it does not seem to be drying fast enough to seal the wound.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Kirk,

Your mistake was pruning the stems so far back. You should have left at least several inches of stem above the cane if you wanted to generate new growth.

Sealing pruning wounds is an outdated practice for indoor or outdoor trees. Tree wounds heal better when they are exposed to the open air. Try putting a little sulfur on the wound to prevent mold.
