Mistletoe Fig leaves

Question
Hi,

I have a mistletoe fig that has been growing slowly but happily in the same location for about 5 years. I recently noticed that the new leaves are oval shaped with a pointed end unlike the round leaves that it has always grown. What could be causing this to happen? I really love the round leaves, will my plant go back to growing round leaves? I have noticed some roots growing out the bottom of the pot, could it need to be repotted?

Thanks for your help,
Susan

Answer
Dear Susan,

Sometimes leaves change shape because of change of conditions i.e. if they are receiving less light they often change into a thinner shape but as you say your plant has been in the same location for about 5 years I presume the conditions have not changed?

Also sometimes a plant will have different shaped leaves.  I'm sorry I really can't give you an explanation for this and can only suggest that time will tell whether the plant will continue to grow pointed leaves or if some will grow rounded.

It would appear that your plant needs repotting but this should be done in the spring.  What you could do right now is take some stem cuttings from the area of the plant which has rounded leaves and grow yourself some new plants.

Good Luck
