Fig tree leaves browning

Question
Dear Mrs. Crowley,

I have a black mission fig tree in a large pot on my patio. It was planted last thanksgiving, and has been growing beautifully since. Just in the past few days, I've noticed the leaves looking not as perky and yellowing slightly. In the past day, one of the leaves has grown a large brown spot in the middle of the leaf stretching out from the center vein. This fig gets full sunshine and keep it moist. The pot does have a tray to it, and use fruit fertilizer we use monthly on it as recommended by the fellow as the nursery who sold us the tree. Any idea what may be causing this browning and how can we make our fig tree happy again?

Thank you very much in advance,

~Sera

Answer
Hi Sera, Hopefully you are not using Miracle Grow as that will surely do in your plant in time, check your label to make sure salt and chlorine are not in your fertilizer also.   You must rid the tray under your plant as it will rot it unless all the water is removed after 15 minutes or you will have brown tips or leaves.  Next fungus attacks the plant, making them yellow,  this time of year and also nematodes that clog the roots of the plant even in a pot.  I use Atomic Grow on my figs and it makes them healthy to ward off these problems.  kathy
