Palm tree care

Question
We have a palm tree plant that does not get alot of light. The leaves are turning brown at the tips. Is it from too much water or not enough? We spray it with water when watering it also.

Answer
Maureen,

It sounds like too much water with possible root rot. Do not water it if it feels really heavy. Insert a bamboo skewer into the soil and leave it for at least an hour then pull it out. If it is wet do not water. Put it back in and wait a few days and check it again. Wait to water until it is dry down to the bottom 2 inches. Never leave water in the drain tray of any plants for more than 1 hour. Misting it anytime is fine. They love the humidity on their leaves, just not too much water on their roots. Follow these instructions and it will get healthier. If you can increase the light a bit it may also help. Palms like more light than most people think they need to stay healthier. Flourescent light can help. Good luck.
