indoor palm tree

Question
I have an indoor palm that has outgrown my 8 ft ceilings. During last summer I moved it to a room with plenty of ceiling room (indoor sun room ) but with no heat. I live in Idaho so our winters are cold. I moved the palm back into the house and the bottom leaves fell off within a short time. The tree, not including the pot, measures 75 inches. The trunk at the bottom now has 55 inches of no leaves, so the top 20 inches has leaves and plenty of new growth, which is of course touching the ceiling. I'm not even sure what to ask other than is there a possibility that the palm will root if cut or will new leaves grow on the trunk left in the pot ??   Does not seem like a solution to me, but do you have any suggestions.
Just wait till summer probably.....but will it ever grow leaves on the trunk again which is 55 inches of just trunk.

Answer
Hi Linda,
Sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question. I had a unexpected computer problem and was unable to access the Internet.
No, new leaves (they are actually called fronds) will not grow on the stem/truck left in the pot.
You can prune off or cut back individual palm fronds down on the body of a palm, but you cannot prune off the top growing tip on any stem/trunk. If you remove the top off of a palm stem/trunk, it will stop growing and will die.
I am not sure if the top part cut off will root or not. Since removing the top of a palm plant will kill it, I have never cut off the top of a palm plant and tried rooting it. I tried to research it but was not able to find any reliable information on if the top would root or not.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
         Thanks
             Tracy
