sad looking rubber tree plant

Question
Nearly all the leaves on my plant are or have turned either yellow or brown.
I've read about over watering but am wondering if I should remove the brown leaves myself.
Please help me as I have had this plant for years and am quite sad to think I may loose it.
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Julie,

Yellow and brown leaves are generic symptoms with multiple causes. Inadequate light is the most common cause, but either under or ever watering can also cause this leaf discoloration. It is fine to remove the discolored leaves because they will not recover and will eventually fall on their own.

I cannot diagnose your Rubber Plant problem because you haven't provided any information on the light avaialable to it, its pot size or how often you water.

Briefly, Rubber Plants must be kept close to an uncovered window that provides bright sunlight all day long. If it is in the proper sized pot and is moderately potbound, then it should be watered when the top quarter of the soil feels dry.

I have written an article on Rubber Plant care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
