care for rubber tree plant

Question
Hi,
I have a rubber tree plant and some of the leaves are turning brown and then dying and falling off. What is the problem?
Also. Have you heard of putting mayonnaise on each leaf. What does that do? Is it good for it. Never tried it yet.

Answer
Sharon,

I suspect your tree is not getting enough sun and may be getting too much water.  Mayonnaise is used by some to shine leaves. NO!!!! It is not good for it. Just wipe of the leaves with a soapy dishcloth then if you want a shine polish them with a dry soft rag like an old diaper or piece of sheet. Move your rubber tree to a sunnier location and it should do better. If this is an older tree and it is the lower leaves on the trunk it is normal for them to turn brown and die as it turns into more of a free than a shrub. In the tropics this plant becomes an 80 foot tall tree. It will not stay a cute little plant in your kitchen window forever. Good luck!
