dividing a kangaroo paw fern

Question
I have a VERY large hanging kangaroo paw fern that I would like to divide into two or three plants. The roots are wrapped around the pot and I don't know how to even begin. When the cold weather comes I want to be able to bring the plant inside and it is so large now I would have no place to put it.

Answer
Remove the plant from the pot exposing the whole root system...Cut it in 1/2 (or thirds-top to bottom) with a serrated knife...Pull the wrapped around roots away from the rootballs as much as you can...Cut any roots that split or are too long...Place the roots in a pot (you will need another pot similar size for the other 1/2 or 1/3 of rootball)...Put enough potting soil under the split rootball to make the top of the soil 1" below the top  of the pot...Then pour potting soil around the root ball firming(tamping) it with your fingers as you go around the pot...Do this 2-3 times until the soil is firmly in place...
Then water the plant filling  the pot up to the top of the pot numerous times(wet the soil well)...Then give it a morning sun exposure...Treat it like you were doing before you divided it and transplanted it...
Do this and you should be successful.
Good luck.
