ponytail palm cuttings

Question
Good day,
I have three ponytail cuttings in a pot that I purchased as such.  I am wondering if these cuttings will ever grow a trunk and actually resemble a ponytail palm?  Are there any tricks I should follow to help them along?
Thank you for your time,
Trevor

Answer
Ponytail (also called elephant foot plants)should all grow trunks as they mature...You could leave them in the single pot or separate them into 3 pots...If you chose to separate them do the following...
Separate the 3 ponytail plants by cutting the soil ball into thirds (one plant per section) top to bottom with a serrated knife...Place the plants in separate pots...Put enough potting soil under the rootball to make the top of the soil 1" below the top of the pot...Then pour potting soil around each rootball firming(tamping) it with your fingers as you go around the pot...Do this 2-3 times until the soil is firmly in place...
Then water the plants filling  the pot up to the top of the pot numerous times(wet the soil well)...Then give it a morning sun exposure...

Also you want to make sure they go dry between waterings. They do rot out quickly if kept too wet. Water your plant based on how much it weighs when thoroughly watered VS when they are ready to be watered again. Plants die from too frequent waterings, not from how much water you give them at one time. Pick the pot up and feel how heavy it is after watering it thoroughly. Don't water it again until it feels considerably lighter and the soil top of the soil is light in color. Depending on plant types, sunlight exposure and pot size plants will need water at many different rates from once a day to once a month or more...
Hope this helps.
