When to plant my Blue Spruce?

Question
My husband's mother just passed away and a friend of his gave him a small Blue Spruce, (about 9 inches), to plant in her memory. We live in southern Michigan. The nights have been in the 30's and 40's, the days in the 40's. Should we wait until spring? If so, what do we do with it now? Thanks!

Answer
I assume this is in a pot. I would not plant it out right now but wait until this spring. The pot needs to be watered this winter but only keep the soil moist but not wet. Do not bring the pot inside where there is no heat. Heat  will dry the plant out. Keep it in a place that will not allow the pot to freeze for example an unheated garage near a window.

When you plant it next spring dig the hole twice the size of the pot and as deep. Plant the tree with the soil from the pot making sure you do not damage the roots. Fill the hole with good top soil.  Mulch around the plant with not more than 3 inches of mulch and water.
