playsand

Question
Since I can't find Perlite that is fertilizer free, can I use "playsand" from Home Depot?  It is clean and white sand.  Can I just use pure peat moss if nothing else?  I am having a problem finding just perlite without fertilizer added.  Everything has Miracle Gro stuff added!!!!!!!UGH!! Don't they know that some plants don't need fertilizer!!!!  I really need to write those companys!!!

Ok thank you again for all you help!!

Answer
Hi Ricky,

Yes, sand is an acceptable substitute for perlite.  Another option is fine grade pumice.

If you use sand, make sure it is silica sand.  Play sand is a generic term and could just as well be made from beach sand.  Look for the term silica sand.  You might find it in the construction section of your local hardware store.  You might also find it in the garden section being sold as horticultural sand, but you will pay a bit more.

Good growing!
