What kind is it

Question

Pitcher Plant
I got this plant at a flea market for 16 dollars. I just thought it was amazing and had to have it. The tag that was on it only said pitcher plant, but someone told me that there are different kinds. They also said that I could easily have paid over 100 dollars for a plant like it, and its size.

Also, I asked the person if it was easy to take care of, and he told me keep it out of direct light, and that is about it. I really would love for this plant to flourish. Could you give me any advice to keeping it healthy.

Answer
Hi Vivica,

This plant is Nepenthes x ventrata, an Asian pitcher plant hybrid.  They are very easy to grow.  If you live in an area that gets winter, grow your plant in a sunny window in the house.  If you are in a more tropical climate, grow the plant outdoors in partial sun.  Don't keep it in full shade like the person told you, or you'll never see any new pitchers.  It needs some sun.  Hanging in a tree like you have it in the picture is often ideal.  Keep the soil moist.  Water a couple times a week.  For more details on growing Nepenthes visit:  http://cobraplant.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=7&chapter=1

A plant like this in our nursery would sell for about $50.00.  You did get a very good deal.

Good Growing!
