rainy conditions

Question
Dear Jarob,
It has been raining here in the midwest(michigan) on and off for the last two weeks. I ordered venus flytraps( venus, dente, and red dragon from sarracenia northwest two weeks ago). I am wondering how much rainfall is too much? I constantly remove excess water from my flytraps standing containers. Is three to four hours of rainfall a day too much.

Answer
Hi Herbert,

Flytraps are native to North Carolina, so keep in mind that region can sometimes experience lots of rain as well.  We also grow our flytraps and Sarracenia outdoors in Oregon, and we've been known to have lots of rain, especially during the winter months.  So your plants will be fine even with a few hours of rain.

Ideally the water level in your tray should be no higher than half way up the pot. If the water level can get higher than that during a bout of rain, you can keep the water level down by either elevating the pots with rocks under the pot or by using a shorter tray or saucer.  In our trays, we bore holes on the sides so that the water level is always constant even when it's raining very hard.

Good growing!
