Lighting for N. Sanguina

Question
You guys just answered my question about keeping the Orange pitcher plant inside, and it was extremely helpful. What kind of lighting would you recommend for these plants? I've been browsing other sites and am getting answers all over the place. Thanks for your help.

Alex

Answer
Hi Alex,

The best type of lighting is natural sunlight.  Nepenthes sanguinea will grow well in a very sunny south or west window.  If natural sunlight isn't feasible, then use strong fluorescent lights, approximately 40 watts or more in actual output.  The lights should be about 8 inches above the plant and set for 12-14 hours per day for fall and winter.

Keep in mind that these are guidelines as are other recommendation you read elsewhere.  You as the grower will need to adjust the lighting to accommodate your specific microclimate.  For example, If your plant isn't producing pitchers, you may need to increase the light intensity.  If you notice leaf burn, you should shelter your plant and perhaps acclimate your plant gradually to stronger light intensity.

Think of it like dietary recommendations.  If you eat the recommended caloric intake of 2000 calories and you gain weight, then you may need to decrease your intake or exercise a bit more.  If you eat 2000 calories per day and lose weight, then you might need to eat a bit more to maintain your nutritional status.  So keep in mind that you may need to adjust the lighting according to how your plant is growing.
