transplanting sarracenia bare root after dormancy

Question
Hi,

I have a quick question regarding sarracenia. It looks like by late spring or early summer I will be able to resume plan for the bog. (Yes!) I will be getting some of my sarracenia from Meadowview Biological. But they sell only bareroot. My question is how do I proceed putting my sarracenia in a bog or another pot when I'm receiving them bareroot while reducing the shock? Should I even bother and wait till late this fall to order?

Thanks,

Daniel Bunton

Answer
Hi Daniel,

Have you ordered from Meadowview before?  I sometimes get plants from them, but I only get them in early spring.  The reason for that is because they also cut off all the pitchers from the plant, even if the pitcher still looks good or is a new growth from the previous season.  So keep in mind that the plant you'll get will be completely bare.  Their intentions is to minimize the transport of insects.

There's no special procedure to reduce the shock of plants after getting them in the mail.  The most your could do is to get them in your bog ASAP.  After that, you need to wait.  In general, Sarracenia tolerate the shipping process very well and the issue of shock is mostly a non-issue.

Good growing!
