transplanting agave pups

Question
Sorry, I wasn't clear, the largest issue is the root binding:1.how much root is needed to keep both mother & pup alive?
As I try to separate them I have to cut and rip:
2.is this killing the mother?
thanks,pj-------------------------

Question -
I've just broken a pot of agave open, mother plant and many pups, with the intention of transplanting pups and repotting the mom.
It is so totally root bound.  I have no idea how to proceed. Do I cut,do I rip or do i give up?

Answer -
Dear PJ,

If the "pups" are all white, leave them or cut them off and discard. If they are green, they can be replanted after being separated from main plant. Water only when the soil is dry and they should take root. Hope this answers your question.

Sincerely,

Greg

Answer
Dear PJ,

Root binding really isn't too much of an issue to a succulent plant, you'll want as much healthy root as possible. No, seperating the plants should not hurt either of them. Just be careful when you seperate them so that you don't get hurt (as most agaves can have some pretty nasty spines).  Good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
