worms in sarracena

Question
Hi i just got 3 sarracenia purpureas and i look in the pitchers i see little white worms, are they fugas knats and do i leave them or how do i get rid of them

Answer
Hi Dylan,

Congratulations!  You have some Wyeomyia smithii swimming around in your pitchers.  This is the Pitcher Plant mosquito larvae.  They are are symbiotic with Sarracenia purpurea, and very beneficial to them.  Here's some information:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyeomyia_smithii

Good Growing!
