D. cistiflora purple flower

Question
D. Cistiflora
D. Cistiflora
Hi again!
I purchased a D. Cistiflora and just received it today. It's currently dormant, from what the packaging stated. I have outdoor and indoor Drosera, but usually get some information on the specific plant either from Sarracenia Northwest DVD's or monthly podcasts. I purchased this plant from another vendor, it was said to be a winter flowering plant, but unfortunately thats about all I know about it.. Just some general care info would be much appreciated. With all my other Drosera being happy and in grow mode this one just throws me for a loop. Indoor, outdoor? Tray method, or minimum top watering while dormant? Any info would help, thanks!

Answer
Hi Christina,

Drosera cistiflora is a South African, winter-growing sundew.  They are dormant during the summer, and should be kept just barely damp at this time of year.  When weather begins to cool in September, resume tray watering just like you would other sundews.  You will need to consider providing artificial light during the winter while it's growing since we have no sun during the winter in the Northwest.

Winter growers like this one, and the tuberous Australian sundews are often trickier than other sundews.  I can't say we have mastered them yet.  It's my next group of plants to try and master.

Good Growing!
