Question
I purchased 11 Sarr. off ebay during the winter between 2 and 3 months ago. I put them all in a big tub and kept them against a cold wall in my basement where I overwinter many plants. I got them out this week to plant outside and all were ok and starting to grow except one (the most expensive of course - Leah Wilkerson)The growing point has rotted. It seems like the back half of the root is ok and the roots seem to be in good shape with some recent growth. I was going to spray it with some fungicide and dip it in some superthrive and go ahead and plant it in the sunny spot I have all my plants in. Soil is about 20% sphagnum, 20% sand and the rest peat. Anything I should do differently to try and save this plant. Thank you so much for the help.

Hi Michael,

It sounds like you may have caught it early enough to salvage.  Simply cut away any brown on the rhizome until just white flesh is visible.  After you do your Superthrive soak, spray the rhizome liberally with a fungicide such as sulfur, Neem, or Daconil.  Give all of your new babies a spray also since it they may have been exposed to botrytis grey mold.

In the future be sure to spray all your plants you overwinter in the basement with a sulfur based fungicide to prevent mold from getting started.  Cool, still, dark areas are made to order for mold problems.
