Answer
where dp you live, I will come and dig them up.LOL
I love ferns!!!!!!!
You don't say what kind of ferns they are. If they are broad leafed,
 the weed killer way:
Spray them with GreenLight WipeOut. It will not harm grasses etc, but it will kill anything with a broad leaf, so if you have other broadleafed plants nearby you don't want to get rid of, be sure you get NO WipeOut on them. That is the fastest and most effective chemical weed killer I have ever used. It absorbs through the leaves, stems and ground. It goes down and kills out the tap root. That particular one is NEVER growing back.
If you saturate the ground, it will take a bunch of waterings and/or rain before you can plant a broadleafed plant in that dirt. If you just spray the leaves(don't have to saturate each one, just quite a few of them) it will not contaminate the ground. You will see them start to die, by the next day, or in some cases, in a few hours. I use it stronger than the directions, like 1 part WipeOut to 2 or 3 parts water, and spray some of the leaves. You just want enough water to carry it into the plant. By the next day, it is really sad looking, in a couple of days, it is dead or almost completely dead. If it has a very deep and strong tap root, it may take another treatment, buy seldom does.
If you have a whole large area, with just grass there, and don't want to plant broadleafed plants there, and other broadleafed plants are far enough away, for you to spray on a still day. You could spray the whole area.
Mix it just a bit stronger than the directions say. A more concentrated mixture will work faster.
 Organic way;
On a very hot day, spray with white vinegar till they are pretty saturated. A little vinegar will make then healthy, a lot will kill them out. the hotter the day the better.
If they are Asparagus ferns, or a narrow leafed fern, I am not sure the WipeOut will work. Try it on just a few first.You will be able to tell the next day if it is going to kill it.
Could it be Dill?
Dill looks like an asparagus fern.
Let me know how it works.

PS. DON'T put the dead ferns in a compost bin or pile!!!!1
