media for Sarracenias and VFT

Question
Is it okay if I use 100% peat moss for the plants media?

Answer
It is usually preferable to mix perlite or silica sand (or other inert ingredients) with the sphagnum peat moss, to help aerate the growing medium and to cause it to not hold quite as much water by displacing some of the sphagnum, which helps the medium to dry out faster than pure sphagnum would dry.

Sphagnum peat moss by itself tends to become so saturated it is soggy, and stays that way for a longer time than many plants including Venus Flytraps are comfortable with or prefer. A growing medium that is soggy and stays that way for too long promotes bacterial and fungal infections and rot that can harm and in many cases quickly kill a plant, so it should be avoided, especially when the temperatures are cool to cold as during dormancy for the Venus Flytrap.

Sarracenia can tolerate wetter conditions for a longer time than Venus Flytraps, although they can also rot in media that is too soggy for too long.

A good standard mix for Sarracenia and Venus Flytraps is 50% (by volume) of sphagnum peat moss and 50% either silica sand (preferred) or perlite, or a mixture of sand and perlite. The sand must be almost pure silica sand, composed almost exclusively of silicon dioxide (quartz) and not common river nor beach sand, which is usually composed of many different kinds of rock.
