growing media for Pitcher Plants

Question
I have potting soil (sunshine mix #7) this mix contains soil moisture gel. Is this safe to use on carnivorous plants? I raise Venus fly traps, Pitcher plants and sundew.

Thanks
Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

The short answer is no.  These mixes will have in addition to peat/perlite in them, wetting agents and lime for pH adjustment.  It will have disastrous effects on Venus flytraps and Sundews, and would be detrimental long-term to Sarracenia.  I've yet to fine any commercial mix that is suitable for carnivorous plants.  You still would need to mix your own.

Good Growing!
