Yuccas

Question
Greg, Hi!
We have had two yuccas in pots for about three years now. They are a pair and have normally done very well. Cut them back to stumps some 12 months ago and as per usual they grew new dark healthy shoots. Now only one of them is slowly drying out in the leaves and they are looking paler and dryer as the days go on. Right next door is the other yucca and it is doing fine....can you guess what might be the problem...root bound?

Answer
Peter,

I have not heard of anyone trimming their Yuccas in that fashion, especially not annually. However, that said they should branch and produce new shoot like you describe at least the first few times. What it sounds like is that the roots have been damaged on the plant that is dying.

If you have roots visible on the top of the soil, then it may be root bound. Try a product called "Superthrive". It is a root stimulator and might help your plant recover. Just make sure to follow the directions. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
