Ficus/Fig Tree

Question
Can you start a new plant by placing the branch in water to root.

Answer
Hi Joanne,

It is theoretically possible to root a thin green tip cutting in plain water, but the odds are way against it.

Tip cuttings are better rooted in a small pot filled with damp potting mix and enclosed inside of a clear plastic "tent." For larger, thicker cuttings it would be necessary to air layer.

I have written an article on propagation that discusses all of these techniques in greater detail. If you would like a copy, send a request to my email address below.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
