Diseases of pomogranate

Question
Respcted sir In my area large group of farmers are initiating pomogranate cultivation our lands are light soils with good drainage climate remains mostly dry. what willbe the spray schedule for ideal crop if climate remains hot & dry

Answer
Dear Balasaheb, Pomegranates are remarkably free from any pests and diseases and because of this, there is no spraying schedule for them.  This is a good thing because not having to spray makes them one of the easiest fruits to grow.  The only possible pest they could have would be mealybugs, and you can spray now during the dormant season with a lightweight or dormant oil to kill any leftover bugs or eggs.  This would also get rid of any scale, but in my experience with pomegranates is that they just don't have the problems that other plants do.  I always loved to have at least one because they were so easy to grow.    The only other thing they wouldn't like would be bad drainage, but you even have that in your favor.  They actually prefer hot dry climate; the only thing you would need to do is fertilize them every year and make sure they have enough water.  This is a great idea that you have.  Pomegranates are becoming very popular in drinks and flavorings in the United States, and you could do very well in this endeavor.  I wish you the greatest of success and please feel free to write to me any time about questions you may have and I will be happy to answer them for you.  With regards, Melissa
