moth question and jasmine tree question

Question
Hello:

1. today I opened my bookcase and saw three little beige moths so I closed the glass doors and then got the RAID. Sprayed it. Do I need to go through every book and try to find larvae? Can putting lavendar flowers in there help deter them?

2. I have potted jasmine trees. They seem to get these brown splotches on the bark, and they can be peeled off. It almost looks like it could be a bug. Is it? What can that be caused by ? These are also noticeable on some leaves too.

many thanks,

Answer
Hi Kat,

I am sorry, but I really do not have any expertise to answer your first question.

However, if the brown splotches on your jasmine are round to oval, they are most likely scale insects, which with a bit of effort can be "peeled" off of the host plant.

There are many horticultural oils that can be used effectively.  Consult your local garden center for some help.   Take along one of the "blotches" that you have removed to confirm that your plant has scale insect infestation.
