fruit tree seeds

Question
QUESTION: This is the person who asked about the plum seeds and peach seeds. If I can't grow them inside, can I start them inside and how long before they outgrow a 6.3" in terra cotta pot? Would they outgrow 6.3" terra cotta pot before they got 3 feet in heigth?

ANSWER: Hi Thomas,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, you can start your plum and/or peach seeds indoors but remember, the seeds need the cold treatment I described in my previous replies.  The first year, the tree is going to grow rather slowly at first but the second year they might get 3 or 4 feet tall.  That's going to be a bit big for the terra cotta pot you describe.  You could probably keep them in that pot for 2 years if you keep cutting the growing tip and keep them at 3 feet.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: First off, Thank you for answering my question. Secondly, how do I open the pit of a plum and get the seed out without destroying the seed? I have tried with the 4 that I told you about and the first on had a spot on it that had rotted and just squished like an over-ripe orange and the second one I squeezed to hard with the pliers and damaged the seed in side and the third and four ones were all shriveled up inside even though I did not damage them. That brings me to a third question. Why were they shriveled up? Was it from being a hybrid? Will they all be shriveled up inside?

Answer
Hi Thomas,
Thanx for your question.  It is always my pleasure to assist those who thirst for knowledge about plants.  ;o)

Don't try to open the pit.  Just leave it whole.  The moist soil will help it to germinate.

The reason some of the embryos were shriveled up is because more often than not fruit is picked at unripe stages.  Once the fruit has been picked the embryo will cease to develop.  In most cases, the embryo has not matured and simply stops growing and withers.  I hope this helps.
