King Palms

Question
David:  Thanks in advance for your time.  I ama Houston, TX resident have two King Palms in a back garden near a pool.  The bark at the bottom of both trees appear damaged and are coming loose, almost as if the tree is shedding itself of this bark. I can literally pull pieces off.  These are established trees and I have not had this problem before now, although these are the first King Palms I have had. Is this a natural occurrence to allow for growth at the base of the tree, or are the trees suffering from some cause unknown to me?
Pete

Answer
I am not familiar with King Palms, but as long as they are not wilting, I would say it sounds normal.  Many plants have exfoliating bark which is normal.  If the palms are wilting, then I would say you have a big problem on your hands.  Keep a watch and let me know your observations.  Thanks.
