white spots on back of maple tree leaves

Question

diseased leaves
I live in Suffolk county, long island, new york.  I have a gorgeous maple tree (approx 40') in my back yard.  It has been a wonderful source of shade for many years.  Last week, I noticed white spots on the back of hundreds of leaves.  Please help.

Answer
Carmela:
These look like a type of scale insects, possibly cottony cushion scale. Carry a few leaves by your local garden center for a positive ID and a recomendation. Because of the size of tree, chemicals may be too costly to apply. Usually there are many predator insects that keep the bad guys under control so we don't usually get too concerned, just keep the tree watered well during the summer and prevent any types of damages to the trunk and roots.
