Cherry Tree Ailing

Question
In the past two weeks almost two thirds of the leaves on my cherry tree have turned brown and died.  On closer examination this morning I noticed multiple sites on the trunk that are oozing small to copious amounts of sap. I live in Northern Virginia where we've been having extreme heat and humidity for the past two months...I've been watering regularly. Is my tree suffering from some sort of blight...are there any remedies?

Thanks

Your symptom description may indicate a potential insect invasion by boring type insects. The sap ooze is a tree defense mechanism to wounds- often insect in origin. If possible wipe off this resinous material and see if you can see a small (1-3 mm diameter)hole. If so, then an insect may be the culprit. Check with your local garden center for some possible insecticides.
